Specific Foods To Eat
A myMPNteam Member asked a question 💭

I wanted to check with the group to see if anyone had suggestions on the type of food to eat to combat the PV symptoms. I know what foods not to eat, however am looking for any diet recommendations.

Thank you!

I went on the Keto Diet during Covid to drop some pounds. The diet worked great, but all of a sudden my back itching was sooooo bad. Keto plays with your homocysteine levels. By time I got to my next doctor appt I had put two and two together. He told me it was a good diet, but not for MPN people. He told me to add fruits and more of the vegetables not allowed on the Keto list, (like Betty suggested with the Mediterranean diet) and things got back to "normal". I've stayed off the sugar, soda, etc. but NO ONE can have my dark chocolate. Sorry. Have to draw that line.

I agree with the Mediterranean diet and its benefits. I do not drink alcohol, sodas/colas or carbonated drinks, I also limit sugar and salt and most convenience or fast foods - too many additives. Plenty of water is key to staying hydrated.

Take care - hope you find this diet helps.

I don't know what others feel about diet. I've read about the recommended Mediteranian (sic) diet which doesn't work for me because I have some co-morbidity issues that prohibits some of the foods recommended by this diet. Also I have some food intolerances, some which developed while taking HU; I am now taking Jakafi, but those food intelerances now seem chiseled in stone (boo hoo). That diet basically is rich in olive oil, veges, fruits, and low in meat. Protein suggestions include plant based items such as beans, etc., fish, chicken and in small quantities with the animal proteins, if I remember correctly. Others in network please correct the record if I'm incorrect in that. I watch my sugar and salt intakes as well as measure my carbs because I'm prediabetic. I eat 1/2 -- 1 apple a day depending on size, blueberries, sometimes raspberries and strawberries, but less often than blueberries. I eat small portions of animal based proteins; allergic to shell fish as well as don't tolerate well some other forms of fish. I eat a lot of salads limiting veges high in potassium because I also run high potassium levels whether or not my counts are high. We all are different; hence try to formulate a diet that works for you based on your your particular situation, etc.
