Hello lovely people 👋🏼

Members with essential thrombocythemia reassured someone wondering if it's safe to fly with platelets around 500, sharing that they've traveled extensively with similar or even higher counts without experiencing blood clots. Several members emphasized practical precautions like wearing compression stockings, getting up to move at least every hour during the flight, and consulting with an MPN specialist for personalized advice based on individual clotting and bleeding risk. A recurring theme was that platelet behavior matters more than the number itself, and while most members have flown without issues, experiences vary, with one member noting hematomas after flights despite precautions.

I frequently fly from South Carolina to Texas for clinical trial visits. My platelets are in the 800,000. I've never had a problem, blood clot.

If I fly and drive directly to the clinic for labs and doctor visit my platelets are usually elevated. My doctor said it's due to the flight. It's better if I fly the day before labs/visit.

In general, slightly elevated platelets are not concerning for an otherwise healthy individual. That's my take on the whole platelets situation. One caveat....birth control pills are a no no.

I am a Private Pilot and have had ET for over 10 years and fly, both my small plane and commercial, often. My platelet count has been well over 500 at times and I have not had any issues. My Dr. knows I fly and has never mentioned any problems I might have. The FAA even gives me a Medical every year so i can fly.

I have flown all over the world with higher platelets than that. It has not been an issue for me. Bear in mind that it is not the absolute number of platelets that causes a linear increase in the risk of thrombosis It is how the platelets behave.

Anyone can be at risk for a thrombotic incident when sitting too long. That is why it is important to get up and move at least every hour. Some recommend compression socks. Your MPN care team can best advise you based on your individual MPN Profile.

Hello Steve!
Thanks for your reply.
The thing is where i live (in Egypt) we don’t have MPN specialists but we do have very good hematologists. I am not really quite sure if they are fully aware of MPN’s (they might be tho) so i try my best to educate myself and ask people who have more experience than me since i am new to this world as i have been diagnosed last december.
Thanks again for your time and valuable comment
