I'm Wondering If It's Prudent To Wait To Do A Transplant. I Would Prefer To Take Advantage Of Advancements As They Come. I'm 67.
I know it's easier when you're younger and many hospitals have an age cutoff at 70. I have an MDS/MPN Overlap.
If bone marrow transplant outweighs your current symptoms it is better to do it certainly after discussion with your hematologist
Hi Bob, my understanding is that bone marrow transplant is only chance of “cure”, but carries risks of secondary infection and bleeding. Think it depends on how you’re doing. Not easy choice. I’m 73.
It makes more sense if you’re younger. One Dr told me that statistically, I was way more likely to die of either a heart attack or a car accident.
Consider that up to 25-35% of transplant patients die within the first year after transplant, most likely due to infection.
We are weighing that decision now as well. We have an appointment at the end of March with the team that does the transplants.
I believe your hematologist will also evaluate where you are at that will determine the need to get a transplant now or if you can hold off.
