Brain Fog
A myMPNteam Member asked a question 💭

I have been diagnosed with ET 4 months ago, my platelets are at 900.000, I have what I'm guessing is brain fog. Anyone every have it? Is it due to being under stress? This weekend, Easter, I forgot single things, a lot!!! I'm a little stressed. Is it just stress and my ET? Does this new symptom mean my platelets are increasing? Is this what brain fog is? Worrying a little bit if simple things I forget.

Very helpful answer Tatiana. Thanks. My brain fog manifests a little differently. Feels like a fullness in my head and it comes and goes with no rhyme or reason. More thought dullness than forgetting.

Dear Renee,

Brain fog or cognitive dysfunction is for sure an effect of MPNs. Too many thrombocytes through the blood vessels tend to create host of issues, neurological and cognitive included. MPNs are also linked to inflammation, and that can also affect the brain, thus cognitive dysfunction. Also, depending on the mutation, our thrombocytes can be hyperactive, which can lead to a cascade of microclotting that can also create problems.
In case your cognitive dysfunction persists or worsens, it is good if you talk to your MPN specialist.

"Prominent symptoms include fatigue (92.7%), early satiety (61.9%), abdominal pain (45.9%), abdominal discomfort (53.2%), inactivity (60.5%), headache (48.3%), concentration problems (61.7%), dizziness (55.2%), numbness (61.3%), insomnia (65.4%), sad mood (62.7%), sexuality problems (57.9%), cough (46.4%), night sweats (56.4%), itching (52.6%), bone pain (48.5%), fever (20.2%), weight loss (34.2%), and impaired quality of life (84.2%)"

Yep. I had it. Along with multiple other symptoms. I went to see a MPN specialist in NY. He started me on Jakafi. And other issues went away

My doctor just responded to my concern over what I am guessing is brain fog, she asked if I wanted to be referred to a Memory Diagnostic Center.

With my high platelets I actually had several mild strokes, so when my platelets are over 400 I panic. Mine are now around 451,000. I get the brain fog. I am still working and when I have to focus, my focus is so hard to keep on the right things that need to get done. I hope you find it gets better. I am worse at times and then better. I just wish my HGB would go up, as I am sure that would help!
