Significant Change In Eyeglasses' Prescription?

A myMPNteam Member asked a question 💭
Lafayette, CA

Hello everyone:

I had my annual eye exam yesterday, and my eye doctor is quite concerned since my prescription has changed significantly in a year. She is scheduling me for more tests. She knows about my PV diagnosis (diagnosed in April 2024). I am on daily HU 500 mg and low-dose aspirin, which so far are keeping my numbers in check.

I noticed my vision getting blurrier and brought this up as well. I also have cataracts, but she told me they are not bad enough yet to correct.

Members shared their experiences with vision changes potentially linked to polycythemia vera, with several describing blurry vision, difficulty reading, and challenges getting the right prescription as recurring issues. Many community members emphasized the importance of managing blood counts, with some noting that high platelets and thick blood appeared to worsen their vision problems, while keeping red blood cell counts in normal range seemed to help. A recurring theme was the connection between PV and dry eyes or blurry vision, with members encouraging each other to pursue specialist appointments and stay proactive about monitoring both their blood work and eye health.

Blurry vision is a symptom of PV. Also, dry eye can be a problem which can cause blurry vision. Some days are better than others for me.

PV does affect my eyes! They get dry, blurry, and I get prisms. It's really weird! Hard to read on my phone for a long time because everything gets blurry.

Hi Marian
Just had my appointment with retina specialist. I’m having blurry vision also. Now taking prednisone drops. Don’t think it can get much better. But hope so. And for you also.

I gave my hospital eye appointment on the 7th of march because when I was in hospital I seemed to have developed diabetes type 2 so I will ask about my sight is a bit blurry

I am finding recent changes to my vision….blurry, double vision. I can’t read for more than about 5 minutes because the words on the page get too fuzzy. I think I am going to make an appointment with my optometrist and maybe get a referral to an ophthalmologist.
