Cell testing for MPNs can come from both blood samples and bone marrow tests. Blood samples are taken to check:

• Complete blood count with differential - shows numbers and ratios of blood cells
• Blood smear - checks if cells look mature and normal
• Comprehensive metabolic panel and liver function tests For a more detailed analysis, doctors may also perform bone marrow testing through:

• Bone marrow aspiration - collects liquid part of bone marrow
• Bone marrow biopsy - takes small solid sample of bone
• Genetic testing on these samples to look for specific mutations associated with MPNs

These tests are usually done by taking samples from the pelvic bone area after numbing the site to minimize discomfort.

In answer to Teresa A: I'm still in early stage of ET from a CAL-R gene mutation. I haven't had to have some of the procedures discussed by other members of this group. I drive to Cedars Sinai Tower Oncology once a month to have a nurse collect blood for a CBC. Dr. Drazin visits the room briefly. The next day, the results are posted on the website, and Dr. Drazin adds a comment.
