What we do know is that CALR mutations are found in a significant portion of MPN cases:
- About 3% to 24% of people with primary myelofibrosis have CALR mutations
- CALR mutations are also found in some cases of essential thrombocythemia
The CALR gene makes a protein called calreticulin, which helps control calcium levels in cells. When mutated, this can contribute to the uncontrolled growth of blood stem cells.
