HealthTree for MPNs on Instagram: "🩸 A new treatment option for essential thrombocythemia (ET) has arrived.
The FDA has approved ropeginterferon alfa-2b-njft (Besremi) for adults with ET — the first new agent approved in the U.S. for ET since 1997. 🔎
What could this mean for ET treatment and care? And how does this approval build on Besremi’s previous approval for polycythemia vera (PV)?

That's exciting news worth paying attention to! Besremi (ropeginterferon alfa-2b) is a form of interferon therapy that was already approved for polycythemia vera (PV), and an expanded approval for essential thrombocythemia (ET) would be a meaningful step forward for the MPN community.

That's exciting news worth paying attention to! Besremi (ropeginterferon alfa-2b) is a form of interferon therapy that was already approved for polycythemia vera (PV), and an expanded approval for essential thrombocythemia (ET) would be a meaningful step forward for the MPN community.

Interferons work by boosting the body's natural immune response to help control the overproduction of blood cells. Besremi is a self-injected medication, typically given under the skin. A myMPNteam member shared their own experience starting Besremi after hydroxyurea and phlebotomies stopped working for them, noting it was still early days but hopeful.

It's always worth bringing news like this to your hematologist or MPN specialist to discuss whether it could be a good fit for your specific situation and risk profile. They can help weigh the benefits against any potential side effects for you personally.
