Exercise Do Or Don’t

A myMPNteam Member asked a question 💭

I am being monitored for MPN and CML. My bone marrow biopsy showed some scar tissue in my bone marrow. I know exercise is important, but I want to know if there are any exercises, types of exercises, or physical activity I should avoid?

Exercise will help with many things regarding your health - but the most common symptom with an MPN is fatigue - and strangely enough - exercise will help with fatigue. I like to ski and was concerned if I fell, I might hurt my spleen. My doctors said not to worry about even that. People with MPN's run marathons. My suggestion if you don't exercise much is to start VERY small - walking is great exercise - and even 20-30 minutes a day is very helpful. Start with even a 10 minute walk and it will make a difference in your life. Go outside. Walk with a friend. Try yoga or gentle stretching. This will help you with flexibility, stiff joints and most importantly for MPN's - blood circulation. Exercise will prevent blood clots. It will also help you with brain fog. Movement is probably MORE important for people with MPN's than the general population. Start small, figure out what you enjoy doing, and have fun with it! Just do it!😊

I'm JAK2+, PV & ET ovelap platelets hover around 900. I'm 51 years of age.
I workout 5 days a week and hike 5 miles 2-3 days a week and I feel awesome.
4 years ago I was drunk, drugged and stoned bed ridden and I've since been diagnosed, am in recovery from drugs and alcohol and have lost around 200 lbs. You got this.

Exercise is essential for physical and emotional well being. Having a trainer to hold you accountable helps. I won't let this crazy disease be an excuse to stop working out.

Also avoid running as it’s bad for your knees and bones!
