Iron Infusion
A myMPNteam Member asked a question 💭

Just had my first iron infusion 2 days ago. Currently feeling worn out. Is this normal after an infusion and normally how long does it take to start feeling more energy. Last month my hemoglobin was 112 and hematacrit was .44.

Thanks for your reply. Your are correct, our HCT and Hemoglobin numbers are very similar and my Ferritin level is 4. My hematologist for the past year has been very supportive and request blood work every month. She would like to keep my HCT around .42 but that requires my hemoglobin and iron to be quite low. I am 68 but very active. I swim 6 klm a week plus cardio and weights 3 times a week.
With my activity level I find I am very tired in the afternoons. My hematologist suggested we try an iron infusion to see if it made a difference. Today, one week after the infusion I feel much better. I swam 2 klm this morning with ease and not tired this afternoon. My new blood work is due in 3 weeks and I’m concerned that my HCT will probably be up. My hematologist is also considering switching me from Hydroxurea to Jakavi to see if that may stabilize my blood counts better. My hematologist is hoping to find that balance where I feel good and my PV is under control.

I'll be interested to hear how your bloodwork turns out. Mine is done every 3 weeks but does not include all the iron/ferritin labs. They never seem to check them unless I ask. I'm exhausted all the time (I assume from the low iron). Happy to hear the iron is making a positive difference for you.

Can I ask why you had the iron infusion? I was told I'm purposefully being made iron deficient to keep my Hematacrit (HCT) and RBCs low (my dr. keeps my HCT below 42. He doesn't really seem to be concerned with Hemoglobin, which mine is around 11 so similar to yours. My iron levels (Iron 29 mcg/dL (low), Ferritin < 3 (low), UIBC 434 mcg/dL (high), Transferrin Saturation Index 6% (low).
