Hydroxurea Symptoms Vs PV Symptoms

A myMPNteam Member asked a question 💭

Prior to being diagnosed with PV in 2021 I was not having any fatigue, dizziness or brain fog. Now I have all of above. Do others have an opinion my symptoms are results of the hydroxurea or my PV. My suspicion is the drug.

Thanks. Recently my hematologist ordered an iron infusion and it really helped with my fatigue. Unfortunately my HCT has also gone up because of the iron. At least for now I do have more energy.

Hi Pepper. I haven’t used Hydroxyurea but I do have PV. I can share with you that PV causes all of the symptoms you listed. So in your case it’s which came first the chicken or the egg . Others here can help you about the side effects of the drug. My fatigue is so overwhelming there are days I feel like I am such a sloth! Previously I was a very energetic person. Now I have had to make major adjustments to my lifestyle. Slowed down a lot. I play a lot of games to help keep my brain exercised and come out of the fogs.

It could actually be the drug or even disease progression. If you find these symptoms disabling, speak with your dr about titrating you off the medication temporarily to see if cessation of drugs stops your symptoms. Hopefully, you have a Dr that listens, as I’ve heard of people switching drs just to change meds or be believed. Praying for you. Be Well!

I have brain fog, fatigue, vertigo, and dizziness. I was diagnosed with PV in June, 2020. I was treated with aspirin and monthly phlebotomy until March, 2023 when I was started on HU. My previous symptoms continue, plus my fatigue seems to be a little more. My WBC and Platelets came down to low normal fast; RBC and HCT came down more slowly. I finally did not have to have a phlebotomy at my last monthly visit in June. Yea.
