Have You Had A Helicobacter Pylori Infection Before Or After Your MPN Diagnosis?
A myMPNteam Member asked a question 💭

I noticed that in my case my increase in platelets happened after a helicobacter pylori infection. The diagnosis of ET came years later, but the stable increase in platelets happened 2-3 years after the eradication of h.pylori
There are several documented cases of thrombocythemia concomitant with h.pylori infection, but thrombocythemia resolved once the infection was eradicated
There are studies that show that this type of infection is more common in people with MPNs than in people without… read more

Joanne3, I had h pylori and didn't have any symptoms. Just finished treatment a couple months ago. I'm PV Jak2 but didn't think that had anything to do with H pylori.

I had any number of issues, H.phlori one, overactive thyroid, meningitis as a baby,. Kidney stones. Also had yellow jaundice when I was young. I had Guardia before this also. You wonder if anyone tracks the illness's people have had. Seems I have some corrupted chromosomes too. 3 addition 9 and short one or a half of 20. In addition to the Jakk2 variant.

I haven't had h.pylori and I don't have ET (I have PV), however, my MPN Specialist happened to mention that she looked back in my medical records and discerned that I was developing an MPN back in 2010 ... the year after I was treated for a serious parasitic infection I contracted working in Ecuador. I later learned that two of the parasitic infections (both blood born) that I've had are considered possible culprits for the JAK2 gene mutation (I'm positive).

Yes! Have been healthy all my life - wasn’t even going to a PCP when I was diagnosed with MPN in 2020. At the time I was having nausea and vomiting and developed a stomach clot. Testing showed I had Hpylori and a Jak2 MPN. Was wondering about the relationship between the two also as I have been extremely healthy otherwise.

Hi Ted,

Infections are usually a nuisance, and sometimes they leave unwanted gifts.
There are pathogens associated with specific cancers (e.g., HPV - cervical cancer, EBV - lymphoma, h.pylori - gastric cancers), but it seems more and more that this could be the case for other neoplasms too, that they have an infection at their origin. If it happens for some pathogens, probably it happens for others too.

I am curious to see if MPN research has any interest in looking at this too.

Best wishes,
Tatiana
