I am a 71 yo recently diagnosed with secondary MF, ET since 2022.
Hi, I had a bone marrow transplant in April and am feeling pretty good now. It is super scary going into the procedure but my team were very honest about the risks and possible rewards. Also, my team would not have gone ahead if they really did not believe that there was a strong possibility it would help, I kept that it mind and stayed as positive as possible after finally making the decision to go ahead. It is a really big decision and if it is not for you, that is ok too. Ask all the questions of your specialist and be very sure you want to do it and if you do decide you can, go in with confidence and appreciate the great work the team does. I really was not 100% on board until the last conversation with my specialist on day I was to consent.
Thank you
Hi, so far I have not had gvhd or any serious issues. I was in hospital for three weeks. I am 59 and I was pretty fit going into the process which helped, I think. It is a really big decision and I hope you have drs you can really talk to and explain your fears and have an honest talk about what can happen. Coming home was good but about hard too, you need someone to really take control of making sure you eat. It is harder than you think to get protein in! Good luck with your decision
Thank you for your response Polly. Did you wind up getting GVHD? And how did that go? How long were you hospitalized? How long before you began making white blood cells? Sorry so many questions, but this is a very big decision for me, as I am 71 yo already
It's completely normal to feel scared after a bone marrow transplant consultation. Many myMPNteam members have shared similar feelings of being nervous yet hopeful about the procedure. One encouraging fact is that bone marrow transplants don't require major surgery for either the donor or recipient.
