I started Hydrea about a month ago and my recent lab work shows my WBC are at 3 and my neutrophils are in the ok range. My doctor did not tell me to take any major precautions but "Dr. Google" says that I need to avoid certain foods (salads, eggs, medium cooked meat, sushi). What have others done?

I was on 1500mg daily and now going to alternating days of 1500 mg and 1000 mg. Going on vacation so I am a bit stressed about catching something.

One of the things about Hydrea is that it suppresses all of our blood counts. My WBC and RBC have been clinically low for a year or more, and other than some fatigue I have not experienced any issues nor illnesses, but for a flu I caught over the New Year coming back from a long train trip. Even with that, I had a very mild case. I don’t wear a mask, but you could if you felt that would keep you more safe, do wash my hands, keep an antibacterial gel and hand wipes in my bag if I am away from home for an extended period. Just basic precautions. All the best to you.

He is aware of my vacation. This is the first time that I have experienced this issue so I am trying to figure out my precautions while traveling. Also my first time taking Hydrea and going out of town. I see him when I get back for retesting. Hoping my WBCs rebound and I can get back to "normal".

I remember when I was on Hu, these things lag abit so it might be worth mentioning to your doctor about your trip, and dropping abit more, then re-test when you get back. It won't be dramatic if you drop to 1000mg a day but should reduce the danger of WBC's getting too low. Vacation sounds good to me...bit envious!
