Hi, do you have a blood pressure cuff at home? If so, have you been taking your morning resting blood pressure? It's a good way to determine if you have hypertension. It's not unusual to have higher blood pressure through out the day or with certain circumstances ie doctor visits. Typically, a two week blood pressure check is adequate to determine if it's an issue.

My blood pressure had been well controlled for years, Last October, after being on Hydroxyurea for 3 mos, it started to spike. I was referrred to my cardiologist who had me test BP at home for 5 days, after which they started me on Metoporol which has helped a lot.

I asked my ONC/HEM if ET was a chicken or egg scenario, but never got an answer. I had been sent to the cancer clinic in 2007 and again in 2014 due to really high WBC, anemia and crippling migraines. Clinic found nothing in 2007 or 2014, so referred to neurologist. Numerous drugs and procedures until I decided enough a sought other solutions to stop the migraines and bone pain. Went to a spine clinic and received ablations in my cervical spine that eliminated the migratines for up to 2 years. Also did ablation lower spine to relieve sciatica pain. Again worked for awhile. Later referred for back surgery which I declined. No idea if they related or not, but can’t help but wonder.

I worked in business intelligence for many years and think it would be interesting to look at comorbidities on a timeline, bloodwork as far back as physically possible and then year of diagnosis and comorbidities at diagnosis. The devil is in the details not graphs that most drs seem to think tell all. The MPN Registry seems like a good step in the right direction. I have not signed up as yet because of health issues for my wife. I do plan to do so while our son is here to assist for a month.

One day at a time and Live Long and Prosper!!

I find my blood pressure an interesting thing. I have had high blood pressure for years. I have polycythemia vera so I have too many red blood cells. On my last phlebotomy at the start of it my blood pressure was 154/78. After treatment it was 120/80.

I felt I was really overdue for a phlebotomy so I thought a high blood pressure was expected. I don’t know for sure. My previous phlebotomy in late December 2025 was borderline for needing it and my blood pressure dropped to the point that I wasn’t allowed to leave without more juice and a snack.

I don’t know if there’s a relationship but I do wonder.

ET doesn't directly cause high blood pressure, but the two are connected in important ways. High blood pressure is actually considered a risk factor that doctors look at when assessing a person's risk for blood clots with ET. ET does cause a range of blood vessel-related symptoms that can sometimes feel similar to or overlap with high blood pressure symptoms. These include:

- Headaches
- Dizziness and lightheadedness
- Ringing in the ears
- A feeling of fullness in the head
- Blurred vision

These symptoms are linked to how the excess platelets interact with blood vessels, rather than being caused by high blood pressure itself.

It's worth having an open conversation with a hematologist about any blood pressure concerns, especially since high blood pressure can influence treatment decisions and overall risk management with ET.
