Members shared their experiences with mouth sores caused by Hydroxurea, with most reporting that their doctors did not discontinue or reduce the medication for this side effect alone. Several members offered practical strategies including prescription mouth sore creams, Crest Detoxify toothpaste for prevention, B12 and D3 supplements, and a careful technique of swallowing the pill with water to avoid direct contact with mucous membranes. A recurring theme was that while mouth sores can be uncomfortable and challenging to manage, many found ways to cope while continuing treatment, though some members ultimately chose to discontinue Hydroxurea when the side effects became intolerable or raised concerns about long-term health risks.

That’s one of the reasons I wanted to get off HU (which I did in January). With all of the mouth sores that seem to be so common, and the fact that my mother died of cancer of the jaw, it was scary enough when I began to develop swallowing issues, sore throats and hoarseness all last year. I had taken HU daily for four years, and since I’ve been off it, no further swallowing or throat issues. Also, my PV symptoms have lessened, energy level increased, and I generally have a more optimistic outlook. Going into my 88th year, I’m looking forward to many more good years than bad…..may even tackle another mountain trail like I just completed last week.

I've been getting less mouth sores from hydroxurea since I started Crest Detoxify on my gums.

H Diannedaily, yes I’ve experienced that numerous times .My mpn specialist never stopped or reduced my hydroxurea for this matter. I just did mouth sore mouthwashes and given a certain prescription cream for the ones that would become extremely large . That wasn’t a reason to stop or reduce medicine.
