Thank you so much for your kind words! My new hematologist is on maternity leave and I’ve only seen her one time she prescribed aspirin and follow up blood tests! My Ferritin Serum level is also high normal is 150 im at 165. I’m not sure if I should stop taking iron because it indicates iron overload. They scheduled me with a new Dr and I have a video visit. I’m going to ask for a specialist.

It's understandable to feel concerned about this increase, but try not to panic before your appointment. While your platelet count is elevated above the normal range (150,000-450,000), high platelet counts don't always directly correlate with immediate complications.

Research shows that high platelet numbers alone aren't strongly linked to blood clot risk. In fact, large studies have found little correlation between higher platelet counts and increased risk of thrombosis (blood clots). The bigger concern typically arises when platelet counts exceed 1 million or 1.5 million, where bleeding risk actually increases.

Your hematologist will focus less on the number itself and more on:
- Your overall symptoms
- Your risk factors (age, history of blood clots, genetic mutations)
- Whether treatment is needed based on your individual situation

Many people with MPNs live normally with high platelet counts without needing aggressive treatment. Your upcoming appointment is the right step to get personalized guidance based on your complete health picture.

Might call your insurance about seeing a specialist, see what they tell you is required. I have an advantage plan and don’t need a referral, just a physician who accepts my Aetna insurance.

Good morning! I’m still waiting for an appt to see an MPN specialist. Specialist is waiting to get a referral from my PCP. She’s won’t be back into work until the 30th. I also contacted the NP/Hematologist for a referral and as of today haven’t heard anything. It’s been a roller coaster ride since diagnosis. I’m losing trust with the providers I have now! So I’m really anxious to see a stable team of specialists. First I was told my high platelet count was due to aging. Then my dx of ET/CALR was low risk. Now it’s intermediate risk and need Hydrea. I have an advantage plan and looking for a better insurance. So I don’t have to go through loopholes to see a specialist. Does anyone recommend any insurance plans? 🙏🏼
